It's Been a Week

since he officially became a big boy.

I will miss the tradition of Garrett blowing out his birthday "candle" at school.

And him walking the circle with pictures of himself growing up. Hearing the children ask, "Who is that?" Hearing him proudly tell them "Me!"

I will miss the joy of bringing him home with me after his celebration at school to begin our celebration at home.

The highlight of his birthday was for me, hearing him say, "This is the best day ever!" while we were eating cake.

Ever since his second birthday, where I let work take priority over this very special time, I have made every effort to shower him with the affection & specialness he deserves on his special day. I try my best to let him know that on this day, his day, he is my priority. Hearing him bask in the glory of his day made my heart sing.

I am happy to report that the Ben 10 Omnitrix cake was a hit with Garrett. On Saturday morning when he got to see it all he could say was "Awesome!" There were a few things I would have done differently but it was good enough!

The birthday party went off without a hitch & Garrett had a blast. We had a great group of kids show and the energy in the room was a bit chaotic but so much fun.

I was very excited about the awesome goody treat I found at Michaels. I was looking for something this year that did not involve a bunch of trinkets or candy in a bag. I was over the moon when I found these art sets for only $3.

Even better, we were able to donate the extras yesterday to Santa's Helpers. Garrett's birthday this year gave us an opportunity show him the spirit of Christmas. He received a few presents that he already had or that I had bought him for Christmas. Instead of using gift receipts or returning the duplicates we talked to him about donating the extras.

I held my breath as I floated the idea & was so pleasantly surprised when he told me "Yeah, sure. I don't need two." I am so proud of him. I can only imagine how hard it is at five to give up something you've just been given.

With all the birthday festivities to an end we have turned our focus to another important birthday, that of our Savior. Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

He's so grown-up! I'm impressed that he was willing to give away new toys. Not many older kids would do that, much less five year olds. You're doing such a great job!

He's becoming quite a giving young man. You should rightly be proud of him. You and your hubby are doing something right with him. I can't get my 6 year old to do that. BTW, thanks for always allowing us strangers into your life through your blog. I could feel your emotions through your writing. Your blog is a special place.

That's awesome that he agreed to donate some of his birthday gifts. I've always wanted to do something like that with my kids, but never really knew how to start.
